Beatrix Potter

Beatrix Potter was born in London in 1866 and died in 1943 aged seventy-seven.

The story of her life and Hill Top Farm at Sawrey in the Lake District is well known, and many of her books were translated into the main European languages including Dutch, French, German, Spanish, Italian etc. and also into Afrikaans and Japanese.

Her professional career did not really begin until 1890 when a German publisher accepted six sample greeting cards, and moreover requested more. Commissions followed, and a few years later Potter decided that the picture letters she had been writing to children would make a good book. Her manuscript was initially rejected by six different publishers so at the end of 1901 she decided to publish 250 copies of Peter Rabbit herself. The books were a great success and in February 1902 she had another 250 printed.

Potter then resubmitted her book to Frederick Warne & Co. who offered to publish Peter Rabbit if she could produce coloured illustrations instead of the black and white ones. Hence in October 1902 the first edition of 8,000 copies of The Tale of Peter Rabbit was published.

Squirrel Nutkin and the Tailor of Gloucester followed in 1903, Benjamin Bunny and Two Bad Mice in 1904, and over the next ten years Potter produced one or two new stories each year, including Mrs.Tiggy Winkle in 1905 and Jemima Puddle Duck in 1908.

Beatrix Potter's work lives on and continues to be a source of delight to young and old throughout many parts of the world. As a result the early edition illustrations from these books are much sought after and increasingly more difficult to find.
